Solar Batteries

Solar Batteries

Solar Batteries are extremely popular in South Africa because they store either grid or solar power for later use, like when the grid goes down due to Load Shedding.

Solar Battery Types

In the past, AGM batteries were the battery of choice. However, today, Lithium-ion Solar Batteries are far more in demand due to their much longer battery life (6,000-10,000 cycles). While there are still a few diehard AGM fans out there, SolarAdvice will always recommend a Lithium-ion battery instead.

It’s not just the longer life span that makes these types of batteries so sought-after. They have some extras that the AGMs just don’t have.

  • Much longer warranty periods(5-10 years)
  • Greater depth of discharge (80-100%)
  • Built-in BMS (Battery Management System)
  • Maintenance-free
  • Safe

Lithium-ion Battery Mounting Types

There are many different types of Lithium-ion Batteries for sale but choosing the correct battery for you is pretty important.

Here are the battery mount options:

  • Wall-mounted
  • Rack-mounted
  • Floor-mounted

Choosing a suitable battery mount will depend on how much space you have available. If you have enough room at the installation site, you could pick any battery you’d like.

However, if you have very little space, like in a single garage, for instance, a wall-mounted battery would be best. At a push, you may be able to get away with a floor-mounted battery, but a rack-mounted battery will more than likely take up too much space.

Part of a System

Solar Batteries don’t work on their own and need a few other pieces of equipment to function.

First, you’ll need a Solar Inverter.
The inverter will convert your stored DC power into useable AC power. They also manage your battery's charge to ensure that your solar battery is in good health.

A Solar Inverter with a battery and no panels is called a Load Shedding Kit, while a Solar Inverter with Solar Panels and no Battery is called a Grid-Tied Kit.

Second, you’ll need a peripheral kit that contains disconnect switches and wiring. For safety reasons, you must have disconnect switches installed to protect yourself, your home and anyone who needs to work on your system.

Thirdly, you’ll need Solar Panels if you plan on having them. You can have a load shedding kit that does not include solar panels and add them later.

Solar Battery Prices in South Africa

If you have looked for solar batteries for sale online, you’ll see different sizes and brands available. These two factors will dictate the price of a Solar Lithium-ion Battery.

A PylonTech Battery can start from as little as around R13,000 for a 2.4kWh battery to around R60,000 for a 9.6kWh battery bank and up the more batteries, you add.

Across all the lithium-ion solar battery brands, you can expect to pay between R12,000 and R70,000 and up for home use batteries and millions of rands for commercial batteries.

You can expect to pay between just over R2,000 for a 100Ah battery and just under R5,000 for a 200Ah battery for AGM batteries.

Quality Range of Brands

Investing in a quality solar battery also means getting a significant warranty period. This shows the company has confidence in the products they put on the market, and solar storage solutions are not excluded from the rule. At SolarAdvice, we only source batteries from industry leaders such as:

Quite a recent option on the battery market (2023), the Deye wall-mounted battery has made huge success due to it's slimline and aesthetic design. When paired with the Deye inverter it extends the inverter battery life by another 5 years (10 year in total).
Another nice feature is the size, the 6.14kWh is a great size which suits the small to medium household.

Dyness is a relatively new kid on the block. Their Owner was once the Chief Engineer at PylonTech, so the Dyness shares many similarities with that of the PylonTech stackable batteries. With a 10-year warranty, fantastic performance, and features, the Dyness range is very competitive.

Pylon Tech batteries enjoy a reputation for out-selling the rest. The company was established in 2009 and continues to develop better technology for increased storage options. Also, considered one of the most stable and efficient battery brands on the market, we are happy to make them available directly to our clients at the most competitive prices.
